The Humming Bat of Texas – 6 pm

The Chihuahuan Desert has 1.5x the number of bat species of any other Texas ecoregion, 3x several.  There are bats found nowhere else in Texas and very little in the US.  The Mexican Long-Nosed Bat (Leptonycteris Nivalis) not only migrates to Texas, many are also born and raised in Big Bend National Park, one of three US maternity roosts.  They are primarily nectarivores on the seasonal agave bloom which is very different from the 23 insectivores in the area.

Join us in discussing the unique behavior, anatomy and survey methods of this rare creature with Lindsey Bredemeyer, Texas Master Naturalist.
