“WORD PLAY!” with Jodi Edgerton
Find yourself staring at a blank screen, returning to the same ideas, or just plain feeling uninspired? This workshop will guide you through techniques for sparking creativity, overcoming writer’s block, and bringing new life to your voice and story. Acclaimed writing instructor Jodi Egerton will lead you through an interactive workshop inspired by her work with Typewriter Rodeo and her years performing and teaching improvisation.She’ll challenge you to take your writing in new directions, leap into the unknown, and play with images, words, and ideas. Jodi Egerton is a co-founder and wordslinger with Typewriter Rodeo, creating custom, on-the-spot poems using a vintage typewriter. She’s typed poems at all kinds of events–from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, to the beach in Cabo San Lucas, to Willie Nelson’s ranch in Luck, Texas. You can hear her crafting poems on her 1970 Litton Imperial on Typewriter Rodeo’s weekly Texas Standard segment on Austin’s NPR station, KUT 90.5. Jodi also has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Texas-Austin. With her spouse Owen Egerton, Jodi co-wrote the creativity and writing craft book This Word Now.

winning novelist and filmmaker Owen Egerton discusses how to find and feed the central idea/feeling/question at the heart of your story. Using practical techniques and
inspiring examples, we’ll explore how to pin-point that core idea and build your writing around it. This will be a fast-moving, passion-packed exploration of how we honor and protect the glowing embers that start our creative fires. Award winning novelist and filmmaker Owen Egerton is the author of several books including The Book of Harold the Illegitimate Son of God, How Best to Avoid Dying, and the PEN Southwest Book Award winner Hollow, which was named one of NPR’s Best Books of 2017. He is the writer/director of several films including the Mercy Black and Blood Fest. He is one of the talents behind the Alamo Drafthouse’s comedy show Master Pancake Theater and host of the One Page Salon reading series. Egerton has been voted Austin’s Best Author six times by readers of The Austin Chronicle. He and his wife, Jodi Egerton, co-wrote the creativity and writing guide This Word Now.
